The search market and it's implications
2023-05-08 Status Update
It’s been a while. Let’s dive right into it. As a reminder, Redhood Capital specializes in distilling information. That starts from constantly evaluating source material and feeds and optimizing information retrieval routes.
Currently, the internet is going through a rejuvenation and expansion period. Although the AI hype has begun to calm down in its bubbling. It’s bubbling nonetheless. The search market share is obviously still dominating:
Search market usage and AI tool usage are two different things, but they are related in the sense that search engines are increasingly using AI to improve their results. According to Statista, as of March 2023, Google had a share of around 85.53% of the global search market, while Bing accounted for 8.23%.
On the other hand, many AI tools are available for various purposes, such as SEO, writing, and productivity. Some examples of AI tools include INK, an AI writing tool, and TensorFlow, an AI software for predictive analytics.
While search engines are still the primary way people find information online, AI tools are becoming more prevalent and useful for various tasks.
Prompt engineering is an elevated form of search. It escalates and can enhance search with referenced material. Analogous to wikipedia snippets, this new form of micro TLDR knowledge will further distort and reinforce various narratives so one must stick harder to their guts and guns than ever.
Although Google dominates the search market with 85%, it’s 85% until it isn’t 85% anymore. There are now AI infused and newer gen algo-powered browsers that are available in the market such as Neeva and You. The author finds these new engines appealing as they do not derive or rely on ad-revenue (point-through-click models).
Neeva is a privacy-focused search engine that was launched in 2021 by former Google executives, Sridhar Ramaswamy and Vivek Raghunathan. It is designed to offer an alternative to traditional search engines, such as Google, that prioritize advertising revenue and data collection over user privacy.
Neeva operates on a subscription-based model, where users pay a monthly fee to access ad-free search results and other features such as email and calendar integration, all while preserving user privacy. Neeva's search results are personalized based on the user's interests and preferences, rather than on their search history, which means that users are not tracked or targeted by advertisers.
Neeva's approach to search is different from other search engines as it aims to prioritize the user's experience and privacy over advertising revenue. The company has stated that it will not track or store any user data or search history, and will only use data to improve the relevance of search results.
As of May 2023, Neeva is only available in the United States and is still a relatively new player in the search engine market, but it has garnered interest from users who are concerned about online privacy and seeking alternatives to traditional search engines.
Today’s side learnings: SMART Method
Are you overwhelmed and need a reminder on how to approach work-life balance? Perhaps consider the SMART method:
the acronym SMART, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
This acronym is used as a framework for setting goals that are clear, concise, and effective. A SMART goal is one that is:
Specific: Clearly defined and narrow in scope.
Measurable: Quantifiable and able to be tracked.
Achievable: Realistic and attainable within a specific timeframe.
Relevant: Aligned with the overall objectives and purpose.
Time-bound: Has a deadline or specific timeframe for completion.
By setting SMART goals, individuals and organizations can focus on what they want to achieve, how they will measure progress, and when they will reach their objectives. This helps ensure that goals are realistic and achievable, and that progress can be tracked and evaluated over time.
